Gilbert Garcin always uses the same model (himself) in every one of his photographs. Best Images for PersonThe Process of EditingI used the brush tool, burn tool and blur tool to add shadows to the pictures to make it look more realistic as if it wasn’t edited and the surrealism is somehow real life. In the process of editing I used many editing tools in Photoshop such as the burn tool, blur tool, quick selection tool, magnetic lasso tool, rectangular marquee tool, eraser tool, paint bucket tool, transform tools, cut and paste, contrast, brightness, levels, curves, shadows and highlights, line tool, clone stamp tool, spot healing brush tool, crop tool, brush tool etc. Final Edited ImagesIn this photograph we see a man and woman leaning against each other but balanced on the edge of white concrete blocks. On each block is a black railing type of fence. In the background is three sections, supposedly imitating land, sea and sky. We can clearly see that the man, woman and blocks are in the foreground. There is a strong sense of composition here. Garcin uses the golden section and the rule of thirds. The people are directly in the centre of the image. It is a very simple yet effective photograph with good use of space and shape. Almost every shape in the photograph is clear simple rectangles. This image is in black and white and has quite a high contrast. The photograph has lots of space and is not cluttered. There is an equal amount of space on either side of the people and below and above the people. The background is blurred slightly so you can see it is far away. All the lines are straight and sharp. This image has been thought about clearly and carefully in terms of composition. The image is almost symmetrical if you put a mirror down the vertical central line.
I interpret this image as a reflection on life’s hardships and how important friends and family are in getting you through those difficulties. I believe it is saying that when life gets tough, you need a friend to support you and take some of the weight otherwise you will just fall through the gap into an empty pit of doom. I think it’s also about having a balance in a relationship. You need your friends just as much as they need you too. Life is about supporting each other and looking after one another. Everyone needs a companion. Life is too hard to go it alone. Parts of this photograph are almost repeated, such as the white blocks with a railing on, which is why it is almost symmetrical. Perhaps Garcin is also trying to portray that we are all the same in the end. We all have struggles in our lives. We are all standing on a mountain of worries and troubles which is why it’s important to support each other. Definitions of Surrealism and Surreal Photography
Photos from the internet that I like and inspire meLots of these photographs play around with scale and viewpoint to make objects out of proportion and they look surreal and abstract.
Overall I think shoot 9 went really well and I am pleased with my final images. However I feel that they are not surreal enough. Gilbert Garcin plays around with scale and size a lot. In my next shoot I want to incorporate this idea of scale and viewpoint to make my images even more surreal. Garcin also has a black background in some of his photographs and I want to experiment with using a black background.
Plan for next shoot:
